What kind of camera to bring....

Reading West Africa

Photographic Equipment Requirements

Students will need:
A good digital camera & case (approximately 10 megapixels or more)
A portable hard drive (100 – 250 gigabytes)
An extra memory card
Extra rechargeable batteries

Recommendations for cameras and approximate price:

1. Canon Powershot SX110 IS $250
2. Panasonic Lumix DMC-F228 $330.
3. Sony Cybershot DSC-T700 $350.
4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 $395.
5. Canon Powershot SX10 IS $400.
6. Canon Powershot G10 $465.
7. Canon EOS 1000D Rebel XS $595.
8. Any Canon or Nikon Digital SLR $700 - $$$

The more expensive cameras have better optics so they take sharper pictures. They also give you more controls and have better internal processors for better color and faster use. Buy the best camera that fits into your budget. A digital SLR would be the best choice but they can be very expensive. Cameras less than $200 will generally not be able to create images of sufficient quality.

Recommended Brands for Portable Hard Drives:

1.La Cie
2. GTech
3. Verbatim

Each camera takes a different memory card – usually a CF Card or an SD Card. Purchase an extra memory card for the camera you will be using. You should have at least two cards.

Your camera should come with a rechargeable battery. Purchase a second battery so you will always have a back-up with you. If your camera takes AA batteries, you should bring two complete sets of rechargeable AA batteries and a recharger.
